We are living in unprecedented times. COVID-19 has altered most of our lives. While many have (safely) reopened their machine shops, it’d be understandable to still feel anxiety about the virus. That’s why we’re sharing a few tips on how to work through anxiety during the pandemic.
Take it One Day at a Time
The big picture is overwhelming, frustrating and right now, it can feel bleak. However, when you break that big picture down into smaller pieces, those pieces feel much more manageable. Instead of thinking about COVID-19, the people it has affected, its consequences and what the future holds, think about your situation specifically.
Do you feel comfortable with any precautions you are taking? Do you have a plan in case it affects you professionally? Are you (or your team) keeping your part of the machine shop safe? Do you feel comfortable talking to your boss about precautions being taken at the shop?
Once you break down your concerns into manageable pieces, then you have much more power to address them.
Balance News Consumption
It’s a challenge balancing news consumption with controlling anxiety. Especially during a pandemic, we want to know what is happening and be as up-to-date as possible. That being said, a constant stream of this type of news can take its toll.
An American Psychological Association study reported more than half of Americans said consuming news results in stress. It also showed that many of these people also experienced anxiety, fatigue or sleep loss. In the Time article, it’s recommended to limit your consumption of news to just one block of time each day to protect yourself from the negative effects.
Talk to Others about Concerns
Holding the weight of worry for yourself, your family, friends, co-workers and, well, everyone is a lot to bear. Carrying that weight by yourself is too much. Also, it is unnecessary. During times of hardship, talking to someone is essential.
This can be friends or family members. However, sharing your concerns and talking them out will take the worries out of your head and make them seem more manageable. When concerns are only in our mind, they seem much bigger than when we finally release that pressure. Find a few people you trust and confide in them during this complicated time.
