Reviving U.S. Manufacturing

After decades of reduced output, United States manufacturing has experienced a resurgence since 2020. The rejuvenation can be attributed to several factors. While domestic manufacturing is expected to continue to grow, there’s more to do if we really want to make the U.S. a manufacturing powerhouse. Doing so will help us produce more high-quality products faster—they’ll be more affordable, too—and that’s how U.S. manufacturing wins on the global stage.

ABB Unveils Film Series About Women in Industry

ABB is proud to announce the launch of its new film series: Unstoppable. This series aims to promote diversity and profile three remarkable female leaders in the mining, pulp and paper, and metals industries.

Unstoppable highlights the inspiring stories of three women who have broken down barriers and made significant contributions to their respective industries. Through this series, ABB aims to raise awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion; and encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields.

A Non-Collision Course to Robotic Success

You might assume that robots should work together well in a shared workspace. As it turns out, they can be just as territorial as people—and if asked to perform the same task in close proximity, they might even bump heads (or, more precisely, bump arms). 

In an effort to prevent such problems, Schaeffler Technologies AG saw an opportunity to improve manufacturing throughput and reduce the required cell footprint of certain automated tasks. That’s exactly what Schaeffler’s New Production Concepts unit (NPC) wanted to accomplish. And with the help of Boston-based Realtime Robotics Inc.’s RapidPlan motion control and collision avoidance software, the results have exceeded expectations.

TRUMPF Starts Work on Expansion

TRUMPF Inc. has begun work on expanding its local manufacture and sheet metal assembly of fabricating machine tools in Farmington, Connecticut. The North American subsidiary of the high-tech TRUMPF Group will add 55,800 square feet to its production building for the manufacture of laser cutting, bending and welding machinery.

The project is part of ongoing recovery efforts related to damage sustained after a plane crashed into the production building in September of 2021. TRUMPF will invest an estimated $40 million into the project which will include a Smart Factory that demonstrates advanced automated and connected precision sheet metal production.
